Root Cause Analysis with TrakSYS

E-mail Print PDF
How does TrakSYS™ help me with Root Cause Analysis?

rootcause_smallDetermining the "true" reason for production events and efficiency losses is critical to the ability to improve them. But often there are many events occurring at the same time and it is difficult to manually determine the real reason for the efficiency loss. There are many short-stop downtimes that result in major efficiency losses. How do you automatically track them without modifying your existing automation infrastructure or adding additional hardware to track this information?

TrakSYS™ provides access to information that helps you perform Root Cause Analysis, so that you can determine the true causes of your efficiency losses without overstating them. You can see the sequence of events and how personnel responded, their actions, and comments.

The detail reports show you in a Gantt chart view the simultaneous events and the supporting data, such as the product, job, batch, operator, and other values you configure to track either at the start or end of the event. As a result continuous improvement efforts can address the cause and not the symptoms.

Parsec Automation Corp – Partner Summit 2009

summit2009Last week (14th Sept 09) delegates from around the world gathered to attend the annual Parsec partner summit which was held in Newport Beach California (located in the coastal centre of Orange County).  AcuSYS Software Solutions and local partners AMR Automations CC and Brumartech attended the event.

Amongst the highlights were presentations by TrakSYS users who shared their experience and benefits gained amongst these were;

  • Johnson and Johnson
  • John Deere
  • Ste. Michelle Winery

The release of TrakSYS Lite with version 7 of the software will provide users a solution that competes directly with the traditional OEE and downtime solutions offered by automation vendors and more maintenance focused vendors. This well priced solution for uses that only want to focus on equipment capacity and downtime event recording will however be expandable to the full TrakSYS solution should a user wish to extend their performance monitoring to include aspects such as traceability, WIP, batch reporting, cycle time analysis and other  aspects of Real-time Production Management. Adding this functionality can be achieved directly off the existing TrakSYS Lite configuration.

The latest version of LEANTrak, a multi-meter for continuous improvement consultants and leaders was discussed. This tool allows non technical users to rapidly (within 4 to 5 hours) capture performance information directly from the plant floor for capacity utilisation diagnostics (OEE & Event Analysis).

The highlight of the event was the unveiling of TrakSYS 7.0 which is due for release early 2010. Some of the new features included extended dashboard charting, extended work order tracking functionality (support for the EPCIS Standard), batch recording engine, S88 and S95 support and many more technical features. TrakSYS 7.0 will upgrade existing version directly without the need for engineering.

Why Real-time Performance Management matters?

E-mail Print PDF

As a manufacturer I’m sure you do not question that there is some value in having real-time access to production information and metrics in order to support manufacturing improvement decisions. These solutions provide rapid, accurate access to metrics such as cycle time, yield, capacity, efficiency and downtime and also support root cause analysis, regulatory requirement, production and batch reporting. When making decisions that effect the future of your business would you not want to have quality information at hand?

This said today many manufacturers still rely on a paper trail for information so does “Real-time Performance Management” matter?

Performance Improvement
What we know is that manufacturers today face, and will continue to face, the pressures of improving performance to increase share holder value, competitive advantage and long term sustainability. We also know that the customer will ultimately determine if the business succeeds and should be considered in all improvement initiatives.

An example of this may be the drive to decrease inventory levels throughout the plant. This requires careful balancing of minimal inventory levels while filling customer orders on time, correctly, and in perfect condition in order to create high levels of customer satisfaction while reducing inventory costs. Stock outs due to low inventory could result in customers seeking alternate suppliers with major and long term implications to the business.

Lean manufacturing is a continuous improvement program that has customer value as a focal point, while striving to eliminate all non-value-added activities (effort, time, resources) in the production process. Some of the key drivers for manufacturers to engage in a Lean program are highlight in the figure below from research done by the Aberdeen Group.
